Children-given-the-names-of-other-families

Jeff had been working on his family tree for three years and he had traced his father's relatives 5 generations.

Jeff Jackson was the son of George Jackson

George Jackson was the son of Mike Jackson

Mike Jackson was the son of Kevin Jackson

Kevin Jackson was the son of Chester Jackson

Chester was the descendant of Andrew Jackson

Wow, how cool Jeff found out he was the great grandson of Andrew Jackson.

It took him three years and a whole bunch of research but it was well worth it.

The only problem is Mike Jackson was not the son of Kevin Jackson, he was just taken in by the family, never even adopted but they gave him their family name.

Mike Jackson's father was unknown and real mother's name was Sally Wentworth, Whileworth, Worthers.. something like that, not sure.

That means that Jeff is the descendant of some unknown grandfather

Mike was the son of an unknown father and

Jeff was no relation to Kevin, Chester or Andrew Jackson.

If any time in history any of your relatives were taken or adopted with out publishing it, then future generations do not have a clue, they would only be following a trail of smoke.

Other than adopting parents usually keeping a lid on it, a child that was abandoned by his parents could be ashamed and never mention it to their own children.

What is the chance that your family is a descendant of an ancestor who got their name from a switched family?

What is the chance that some of your ancestors were not adopted or just taken by another family?

The Real Oliver Twist:

///

This story was not made up by shear imagination. In Germany, France, England.. Europe orphans were turned into slave labor.

Poor food, 16 hours a day working, no heat in the sleeping areas.The Real Oliver Twist, by Melbourne University's John Waller, is an impressive tribute to Blincoe, whose story of appalling suffering, ill-treatment and neglect inspired Charles Dickens to write Oliver Twist.

Orphans are not a thing of modern times, millions of orphans have existed over the centuries, losing their identity.

In Zambia, 15% of 1.1 million children are orphans. 75000 of these children live on the street;

And as if the floating markets, bustling streets and emerald paddy fields aren't .... Vietnam has more than 5 million orphans

According to UNICEF, there are well over 100 million orphans. ... children who emancipate from orphanages, the foster care system, or who grow up as street ...

There are now seven million abandoned children living on the streets
of Brazilian ....

Mission Backpack heads to Russia, Guatemala and India Sep 23, 2008 ... More than 145 million children are orphaned worldwide
These are orphans that exist in our own generation. Do you think because they are orphans they won't grow up and produce children.. and what will their children's children use for a name.. In an interview of children in South America most did not know (or denied) knowing their family names and they did not even know their own birth date.

PBS Oct 3, 2008 African slave girl was imprisoned for having a child out of wed lock.
It did not matter that her white master was the father.

How many blacks are the descendants of white slave owners or their sons who were free to do as they pleased?

Wouldn't that mean that thousands of "white" Europeans share the same great grandfathers with these Negroes?

Warner Brothers, not Warner Brothers... but changed their names.
Born on August 2, 1892, in London, Ontario, Canada, Warner was the ninth of twelve children born to Benjamin and Pearl Leah Eichelbaum, and the youngest son of the seven children to survive into adulthood. Warner's parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland.

In 1907, the family name was changed to "Warner."

The Orphan Train was a social experiment that transported children from crowded coastal cities of the United States to the country's Midwest for adoption. The orphan trains ran between 1854 and 1929, relocating an estimated 200,000 orphaned, abandoned, or homeless children. At the time the orphan train movement began, it was estimated that 3,000 vagrant children were living on the streets of New York City.

Controversy of the Orphan Train Movement
The program was controversial; some abolitionists viewed it as a form of slavery, while some pro-slavery advocates saw it part of the abolitionist movement, since the labor provided by the children made slaves unnecessary.

In this period of history there were no laws about changing your family names. When these children were shipped across the country, there was no reason for hem to keep the name of their parents (if they even knew them).

Those who took them in would most likely want to plant their own family name on them .. as adoptive parents do.

It would be a good guess as some of the girls lived in those homes, the fathers or sons would have gotten them pregnant. In such case those children would not have received the names of their fathers.

=============================

Other than the millions of children who had their names changed because they had no parents, children have often had their names changed to that of their step fathers.

How many people try to follow their family by names that came from an adoptive family?

Business Week Debate Room Overseas Babies Displace U.S. Orphans Feb 15, 2008
... There are 150 million children without parental care.
In some countries roam the streets and are homeless and helpless

Count the numbers of orphans or children that have had their names changed through the centuries, then project the number of descendants they would have to day, it is mind boggling.

You have no way of ever knowing if any of your ancestors were orphans or if they decided to change their names for some reason.

Before government record keeping, in past centuries tracking any one by names is a walk through quick sand.

NO, people who have their names changed to not cease from having children. There are millions of people right around you (if you are not one of them) who is a descendant of some one who had their name changed.. and IF that name change was not documented, you will never have a clue who your ancestors were.

You won't be able to do it with DNA unless you start digging up graves and looking for a match.
